Monthly Progress Report: Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013

Fireworks

Woohoo! Happy New Year!

As one year ends, a new one begins! I have high hopes that 2013 will be even bigger and better for all of us here at Careful Cents, both personally and professionally.

I’ve grown a lot as a freelancer this year, and can’t wait to see what we all learn over the next few months. I also had some fantastic opportunities to travel and meet new people, do my first speaking gig and found part-time work with a start-up company.

Best Accomplishment of 2012

Of all the awesome and fun things I did this year, I’m most proud of becoming completely debt-free! I’ve been in debt ever since I graduated high school and bought my first car.

It feels incredible to finally be on the other end of the debt spectrum, and hopefully through my story, I can help others do the same thing!

Guest Posts for 2012

At the beginning of this year I made a New Year’s resolution to publish at least one guest post per month. I actually surprised myself, because I didn’t think I would get as many guest posts accepted and published as I did.

In total I published 20 guest posts. Check out my portfolio for a complete list! I was even featured on a few major media sites:

Books I Read in 2012

In school I used to read books all the time, and I actually enjoyed getting assignments to do book reports. But as I got older – and busier, I stopped reading and started watching a lot more TV.

After I started feeling very unproductive, I picked up a business book from the bookstore and was hooked. It was my goal to read at least 1 book per month. Now 25 books later, I think I met my goal – and I even joined a Book Club on Facebook.

What's your favorite business book?

What’s your favorite business book?

And this isn’t even all the books I read this year, since I couldn’t find all of them and plenty others were ebooks too. Some of my absolute favs are: The Behavior Gap, The Work Revolution, The Start-Up of You and The E-Myth.

Freelance Business and Blog News

Here’s the latest and greatest news for December, plus updates for 2012.

1. New blog design

In case you haven’t noticed, I ended the year with a bang and overhauled my blog with a fresh new design. The main reason I did it was to fix a lot of the problems the old theme was producing. But as an additional benefit, the site is cleaner, more user-friendly and much faster loading.

2. I started the Freelancers Club

A few months ago, I decided to create a more exclusive community. One that encouraged a two-way conversation, different from the blog format I have here. So I created the Careful Cents Freelancers Club (feel free to join)!

It’s a place where other freelancers and entrepreneurs share info about the latest projects, exclusive webinars and freelance jobs. The Club has already grown to over 80 members and has become an awesome, supportive community.

Books I’m Reading Now

I’m proud of all the progress we made paying down debt in the latter half of the year, and am pretty eager to kick the rest of it out in 2013.

With your book list, have you ever read Throw Out 50 Things? It’s short, but good – and I just finished it.

    • http://carefulcents.com/ Carrie Smith

Paying down debt is an awesome accomplishment! You should definitely feel proud of yourself for doing it.

Thanks for the book recommendation, I haven’t heard of that one before. Will have to check it out. I’m an organizing geek, so that sounds like a good one :)

    Hi Carrie,
I hope you are having a great last day of 2012. It sounds like a great year with a lot of excellent progress on your business.

My favorite business book is Emyth, followed closely by Rules for Revolutionaries. I find I can reread both each year and discover something new to apply to our business and life.

2013 is already shaping up to be a huge year. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Getting Rid of It and hope you will share with us the progress you make on your decluttering efforts.

    Happy New Year.

I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store for both of us. As someone who follows your blog and your work closely, you’ve been a true inspiration. I just finished Getting Rid of It and will be sharing my review soon.

Also, I haven’t heard of Rules for Revolutions, but it sounds awesome. Will add it to my list. Here’s to a happy New Year!

So happy to have you following our site and enjoying the information we share.

The book, Rules for Revolutionaries is by Guy Kawasaki…who I may or may not have a man-crush on.

        • http://carefulcents.com/ Carrie Smith

Ahhhh, I love Guy Kawasaki’s stuff too. Will definitely check it out!

Wow, nice work on becoming debt free AND all the guest posts. I only wrote 1 last year, and it before my blog was even up! I like the idea of at least 1 a month, I think that’s my new goals now :) Happy New Year!

    • http://carefulcents.com/ Carrie Smith

Yes, feel free to steal my idea! It’s a great way to increase awareness of your brand or blog. Let me know if you have any questions, I’d love to help if I can.

  • Shannon_ReadyForZero

Thanks so much or including us in your top posts! Congratulations on your guests posts, I’m excited to hear what other great things you’ll be doing in the new year :) . For me, I’m looking forward to being consumer debt-free in the new year – just a few more months and all I’ll have left is student loans. I hope you have a wonderful and safe new year!

  • http://watchoutforflyingninjas.blogspot.com/ Robb @WatchOutForFlyingNinjas!

Happy New Year Carrie! I’ve been reading up a storm this year too, although I haven’t really been focused on one particular area. This next year I want to read a few more fiction books, because like 90% of my reading this year was non-fiction stuff and I think sometimes it is good to just kickback and enjoy a good story.

  • AvgJoeMoney

That Sinek book is awesome. You know how I feel about the E Myth…. Now I’m hooked on another restaurant book. For some reason, I love reading about how great restaurants operate. Maybe it’s because there’s such an immediate pass/fail grade from the customer. You’ll know instantly if they like you or not….

I love that you have a stack of books! I also like reading actual books but they are literally overtaking my house. I’m looking into an e-reader I think. I can’t fit anymore books in my house and when the time comes to move….ugh, I don’t even want to think about it. 2012 was a great year for you!
