Timeshare Rentals: A Surprising Money-Saving Alternative

Timeshare rental

If you’re like me, when you think of traveling you probably think of booking a hotel as your best option – or even finding a family member to stay with if possible. While there are some great ways to save money when booking a hotel, there are other methods to saving money while traveling.

Every summer when I was a kid, my family would rent a timeshare near this beautiful lake in Arkansas. Even now, it’s one of my favorite memories as a child, because we got to interact with the other kids there, play games in the game hall, watch movies and of course, go swimming in the lake.

A timeshare rental is not only a much more fun alternative to booking a hotel, it’s very cost effective too. Why stay in a hotel room when you can book a timeshare suite for around the same price?

We all know that buying a timeshare can be one of the single worst financial decisions you can make, but renting one has some great benefits. Here’s a few reasons why renting a timeshare can be a smarter option than booking a hotel.

It’s more convenient

Renting a timeshare unit is often cheaper than staying in a motel and the units come with full kitchens, living rooms, and separate bedrooms. This makes it perfect for traveling with a family or a group because everyone can comfortably stay together, rather than piling in one room with two beds like a hotel.

Helps you eat healthier

When you rent a timeshare, many times it comes with a nice sized kitchen, stocked with everything you need to prepare healthy food. Instead of going out to fast food places or restaurants you have the option of cooking a few meals and keeping drinks cold in the fridge. This can dramatically cut down on the cost of food throughout the trip while helping you and your family eat healthier.

Saves you money

If you have a flexible travel schedule, you can plan your trip ahead of time and submit lower offers than the asking price. As the owner’s week approaches the more pressure is on them to rent the week out at a lower price. This gives them much more incentive to negotiate with you, so they don’t get stuck with a week they can’t use.

Lots of amenities

A time share rental offers amenities that a hotel room simply cannot compare to, including multiple bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens. It also has additional perks, like hot tubs, private balconies and designer furnishings, plus resort amenities like swimming pools, health spas and on-site restaurants.

Is available all over the world. Timeshares are available for rent all over the world. You even have the option to submit your own offers online using websites online like

Once you’ve experienced how much better a timeshare vacation can be, you might consider renting a timeshare for all your vacations.

  1. Are you speaking of just time shared homes or would condos also be an available option? I agree with you about food, I’m hard pressed to think of anything more prone to cost creep than that, well apart from buying random souvenirs you don’t need… I had a span of time when I was moving from Florida to Texas where for several weeks I was eating out a lot and it essentially doubled my food costs, it was bad.

  2. I always had the impression that time shares were rip offs, but I didn’t know you could RENT one. Sounds like something to look into next summer!

  3. Loooove time shares/ renting over hotels. My family had a great vacation on the beach for a great deal and it felt so much more comfortable being in a house instead of a hotel room !!

  4. This sounds like a great option. I would definitely prefer renting a whole house instead of being restricted to a small hotel room, they can get cramped!

  5. While my mom was off working overseas, she’d do something like this each time she came back for a visit. It worked out awesome since they’d have a full house with plenty of room for guests. It made for such a more personal visit than if she had just stayed at a hotel. It’s definitely something I would consider doing next time I go on vacation somewhere.

  6. Great idea, Carrie. I never would have thought of that.

  7. I’ve had great success with renting timeshares on vacations. I used to think that they were rip offs, but was very surprised to find that there are fantastic deals to use/rent one for a single use.
