6 Weird and Gross Ways to Save Money

weird, gross ways to save money

In the past I’ve taken a few drastic measures to save money, as I’m sure you have to. Most of the time, we won’t dare admit the weird ways we’ve saved money.

The TLC show “Extreme Cheapskate” is becoming wildly popular because of the strange and gross ways people save money – like dumpster diving for anniversary gifts.

Here’s some other crazy ways to save a buck or two (and I may or may not have done a few myself).

Pee in the shower or tub

Now don’t try to tell me you’ve never done this. Peeing in the shower makes more sense to me than peeing in the bathtub, but either way it can save money on water.

Plus you can get two jobs done at the same time; peeing and washing your hair. It’s a win-win.

Keep outdated food in the fridge

To save energy and reduce electricity costs, it’s always better to have a full fridge and freezer. The emptier your refrigerator is, the harder it has to work to keep everything cold.

So what if you have a week old stew that’s growing mold, go ahead and keep it in there to help save energy. Any other questionable items are okay too.

Turn underwear inside out

If my little brother could turn his jeans inside out just to get a few extra days wear, he would. But underwear and socks can easily be flipped out to save money and no one will even notice.

No more doing excessive laundry and using up lots of detergent and soaps. Just turn your underwear inside out and they are good for another day!

Only flush once per day

When I went to Mexico with my high school Spanish class, they had some serious water restrictions. During the day everyone uses the toilet but doesn’t flush until later that night.

Imagine how much water can be saved when you only flush once a day. You might need to invest in a decent plunger, but hey, your water bill will be lower.

use dish soap in the showerUse dish soap in the shower

You step into the shower and start to rinse off when you realize you used the last of your body wash and shampoo yesterday.

So now what?

Well, there’s always dish soap available. I mean soap is soap right?

And if you’re really desperate you can use dishwashing detergent as bubble bath, trust me it gets just as sudsy.

Wash and reuse condoms

Take a used condom, turn it inside out and rinse thoroughly. Now it’s good as new and ready for round two (hey that rhymed).

It’s made of durable rubber so I’m sure it can be used several times before being thrown out. Just be sure to look for any holes or stress points, in case of any leaks. That would be unsanitary!

Wow, there’s some shockers here, but I can’t stop laughing. I used to watch a show called The Young Ones, it was about 4 college students sharing a house. Their theory on underpants was that you can wear them 4 times: right way out forward, right way out backwards, inside out forwards, inside out backwards. Now that’s frugal.

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

Oh gosh Hunter! That’s pretty hard core frugality right there. The “creative” ways people use to save money is endless, and never stops being entertaining.

I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth. But these can’t be serious, right? *shudder*

On a less disgusting tip, if you run out of shampboo, body wash can usually be a pretty passable substitute. It’s not the best, but it’s OK in a pinch. Certainly better than dish soap. (Though you CAN use dish soap in place of hand soap. Come on, people. How about some reasonable substitutions!)

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

I agree Melissa, with some of these I was like “Do people really do that?”. I guess as far as humans in general go, we shouldn’t be surprised. Lol

For the first time in a long time I am totally and completely speechless! :-p

    • http://makingsenseofcents.com/ Michelle

      Haha same here!

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

Haha! I know the feeling Eric :D

ok reusing condoms?? PLEASE tell me people aren’t doing that. I’m pretty happy I don’t have cable right now, I’d be enthralled.

I have taken a bubble bath with dish soap, it was all we used as kids. My kids come back from their dad’s, where they have a septic tank and doesn’t flush their liquid (only the solid stuff) and it grosses me out. I don’t want to sit down and have any of that splash up when I’m going to the rest room.

Want to save $$ on energy in the fridge, jugs of water.

No comment on the peeing in the shower.

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

I hope people don’t reuse condoms!

When my family goes camping sometimes we use dish soap to clean off while showering. It dries my skin out too much now, but as kids it was a great solution.

Jugs of water is a really great idea, thanks for sharing!

Entertaining list, but so nasty.  The least gross idea is dish soap in the shower.  All the rest are just bad ideas. Let’s go down the line…

    1. No pee. Gross
    2. Why keep moldy food? Just put more fresh food or jugs of tap water to take up space.
    3. All this does is make the inside of your pants as dirty as your underwear. Unsanitary.
    4. I can’t see this working out. One flush will not get rid of a whole day of… stuff.  Maybe some lucky days.
    5. Soap is soap I guess… so okay in a pinch.
    6. Absolutely out of the question. Gross and unsafe.

I can’t think of anything gross to add.

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

I totally agree with you Albie! Most of these ideas are totally unsanitary, but I have known people that do some of them. While I was in Mexico I had to use the toilet (and pay for toilet paper) so I’ve had some experience with flushing only once per day.

Besides that, I haven’t done any of these things, but they are pretty entertaining to read about.

  • http://www.thehappyhomeowner.net/ The Happy Homeowner

Wow…not sure what else to say here….   :)

Although with the whole mold thing, it can go airborne & make you sick; it also encourages premature rot on other food items that aren’t yet at their expiration date so you’ll be throwing more away and definitely not saving $$!

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

That’s a very true point. To tell the truth I don’t cook enough food to keep it in the fridge very long. I prefer to buy precooked or eat at my sister’s house. I like Jessica’s idea about using jugs of water to take up space.

I can’t actually come up with anything weird or gross that I’ve done to save money. I’ve done some weird/gross stuff before (can’t think of anything, but I’m sure I have) but not with the intent to save money. Condoms—that just sounds like a bad idea to me. Outdated food in the fridge—out of busyness and maybe laziness, but not to save money. :-)

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

I’ve been guilty of keeping outdated food in my fridge from being too busy. But most of the time it’s just empty since I don’t cook very often. The condoms thing is downright scary!

  • http://www.newlywedsonabudget.com/ Newlyweds on a Budget

please tell me these are just ideas and you actually haven’t reused condoms…

: P and I have totally peed in the shower

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

Oh gosh NO I’ve not reused condoms. Haha

  • http://www.mymoneydesign.com/ MyMoneyDesign

I just found your blog on DollarVersity.

I love these shows on TLC.  They’re like a train-wreck; you’ve just got to watch.  I like the guy who reuses paper towels by drying them out after he uses them.  That is so gross!

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

I agree, the shows on TLC are crazy but entertaining. I can’t help but watch them! I saw the guy with the paper towels…he said he reuses them like 5 times or something. OMG! That’s so gross.

  • http://add-vodka.com/ Daisy

LOL. These make me laugh. That show is crazy – that guy, the one with the anniversary gift – he actually asked for people’s leftovers at restaurants. Who knows what other people have been into?!

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

Oh totally, I know – that guy is definitely one of a kind. Humans in general are weird and full of quirks. You just never know lol

  • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

ROFL! I promise I wasn’t drunk at all. I just have these “genius” (aka ridiculous) moments. I have been known to talk about gross and/or dirty topics from time to time. I like to spice it up. :) Lol

  • Wtf

I’ve heard the prostitutes in Africa re-use condoms. I wonder if that’s somehow related to the AIDS epidemic there…

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

      @7baa5f88377753f70b93b00291d4b564:disqus  That’s a good point! I’m sure it does…

  • http://www.threethriftyguys.com/ Aaron

Haha.. these are great. I won’t public admit to any of these..

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

      Lol. Me either Aaron.

  • http://www.moneyspruce.com/ Jeffrey Trull

Haha this list is just absurd! The only thing I can really see are cutting down on the number of flushes (but once a day is extreme!) I’m glad you’re not pushing these ideas too hard!

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

No way! This is one area I’m not practicing what I preach. They are just absurd and funny ways to be extreme.

  • http://www.dqydj.net/ PK

Nice – these are pretty hilarious, and I admit to doing…. none of them!  It sounds like “a crude bachelor mixed with a cheap college student mixed with an extreme frugalite”.  Good stuff!

  • http://www.mintingnickels.com Lindy Mint

Weird and gross is one thing, but I don’t think I was expecting THIS weird and gross.

I hear if you put your jeans in the freezer it kills more bacteria than washing them in the washing machine…don’t know if that works for underwear though.

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

Wow really? I learn something new everyday. That’s kind of a bizarre idea though.

  • http://www.nomoresheeple.com/ Shona

One would wonder with us ladies…how the heck would we turn a bra inside out to wear again? The clasp clippy thing only works one way! :P

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

      Lol @ca3e4c76f0dbaff5b1b1d3e89c2151d7:disqus  That’s a very good point!

    These are awful!
I had to share them with my boyfriend to remind him that, while I do enjoy saving – I’m not completely nuts!

    • http://carefulcents.com Carrie Smith

I agree, these are some ridiculous ideas. But they do make you and I look a little more sane. :) Thanks @google-9b3c6e591c8ce50d5f4b0a36285b78ef:disqus

I love this this post because I do most of these on a regular basis. And I’ve definitely worn my bikini as a ‘matching set’ when I’ve turned my bras and undies inside out one two many times.
