Careful Cents Review:

  • No points, coins or “bucks”–just cash

  • Minimum payout of $25
  • Support gets really busy
Cashback apps are some of the best apps to have. That’s because you can earn a percentage back on every dollar you spend on things you have to buy anyway, like gas or groceries.

Unfortunately, most people don’t take advantage of these rewards like they should. Let’s use credit cards as a quick example.

Did you know one-third of all credit card rewards, from airline miles to cashback,  approximately $16 billion worth, go without being redeemed every year?

This, according to a 2011 Colloquy study reported in Kiplinger.

The average household that’s active in a loyalty program earns $622 annually, according to the study. Put in perspective, that’s $205 a year in money just left on the table. “That’s enough to buy an airline ticket or purchase a week’s worth of groceries…” they added.

Could you use an extra $205?

Insert the Dosh app.

You’ve heard of it–otherwise you wouldn’t be here–and that’s for good reason. Unlike some cashback credit cards and cashback apps, Dosh issues those rewards to you, automatically, all without having to haggle with the credit card company, wait 4-6 weeks or waste time converting “points” into cash.

Here’s what it is and how it does it:

What Is The Dosh App?

Dosh is a free cashback app company based in Austin, Texas, founded by Ryan Wuerch and Mike Lohner as Dosh Holdings, Inc. in April 2016.

It’s supported on Apple devices and Android devices, and allows you to get paid for shopping with any of the tens of thousands of merchants supported on their platform.

We’ve reviewed many popular cashback apps–our Paribus review and Honey review are the two most recent–but Dosh reigns supreme.

With executives from companies like Google and PayPal, and merchant partners like Walmart and Applebees, the Dosh app is the best cash back app out. Let’s explore how Dosh works, if it’s legit or not (short answer: it is) and how to get started with it.

How Does Dosh Work?

With Dosh, you download the app, connect debit and credit cards and, just for shopping, you will get cash back on purchases and travel, should offers be available.

  • Download the Dosh app and your connect Visa, Mastercard and/or American Express debit and credit cards, then shop using your connected cards. The fun part is Dosh will reward you every card you link–to the tune of $5 per card you link (and additional cash for every friend you refer).
  • Once your card is linked with the Dosh app, you’ll get up to 10% cash or more back in your “Dosh wallet” on eligible purchases. They work with tens of thousands of merchants, and if you regularly shop at any, it’s 100% in your best interest to sign up. Why leave money on the table?
  • Then, once your cash balance in your Dosh Wallet reaches $25 or more, you can transfer it to your bank account, PayPal account–or even donate to charity–all from within the app. Best of all, there’s no scanning or taking pictures of receipts involved. Just shop like normal and save.

The amount of cash back you’ll receive will depend on the retailer you shop from and their agreement with Dosh. Examples of Dosh stores include:

  • Sally Beauty: 11.2% Cash Back
  • Walgreens: 6% Cash Back
  • PetSmart: 4.5% Cash Back
  • Wal-Mart.com: 3% Cash Back

As another example, when their partnership with Forever 21 launched, customers received an automatic 10% cash back if they made a purchase over $100.

Is Dosh App Legit?

Given an “A” rating by the Better Business Bureau, and featured everywhere from Forbes to TechCrunch, Dosh is one of the most legit apps out–period.

Valued at a staggering $240M, it’s so legit in fact that former executives at Electronic Arts, PayPal, Conde Nast, Google and Nike jumped ship to join the company. Their partners include some  of the biggest names in retail, from Walmart to Forever 21 and others. “Dosh is the holy grail of marketing” raved one Brand Media Manager at Firehouse Subs.

Dosh is the only free cash back application that actually sends you a small percentage of cash back without a hassle. Other applications reissue you the cash back in the form of points, take forever to issue your money (some cashback apps only pay you four times a year!), but Dosh has one of the lowest payout thresholds.

Dosh App Pros and Cons

Let’s start with the cons first, since you’ve read so much positive information on the app. Besides, virtually everything has a downside, and the Dosh app is no exception. However, these downsides have very little impact on the function of the application. Rather, they’re simply areas that could be improved.

You can only withdraw your money if you reach $25.00 or higher.

Anything less and the app won’t let you cash out. If you’re in a pinch and need that quick cash, you won’t be able to transfer it unless you get to the minimum threshold.

You can only be registered with one cashback app.

If you’re trying to be a really savvy saver, the downside here is that you cannot have more than one cashback app like Dosh linked to the same card.

If your card is linked to another cash back program, you will have to unlink that card from that program to take advantage of our Dosh cash backs. You will need to contact the other program’s customer support directly and inform them that you are trying to link your card to another cash back program and you would like to have your card’s information removed.

There could be many reasons for this, mainly that consumers would be able to “double dip” from Dosh’s merchants, getting double cashback for the same purchase–a great deal for consumers, but not for the businesses, so hardly a win-win. For more information, you can consult this Dosh support ticket page.

For each friend you get to sign up, you receive $5.

Friends help friends for free. With Dosh, you can get rewarded for it.

The application does all the hard work for you.

You don’t have to scan receipts or do any extra work. Just shop as usual and as you spend money, you’ll make money. Another headache you avoid with Dosh is the loss of information. Because it’s linked directly to your card, there’s always a record of the transactions with you, your bank and Dosh, versus you having to keep scanning receipts that easily get lost.

“Should I Sign Up For Dosh?”

If you shop with a debit or credit card, you should.

Dosh works with tens of thousands of retailers, and, if you do shop at any of them, you’re leaving money on the table without it. Why do that? It’s fast, easy and free to use.

It’s a legit business with a lengthy track record of doing right by it’s merchants and users (and Dosh employees love it, too!)
