Ibotta Review: ★★★★★

Searching for an Ibotta review?

Looking to learn how to use Ibotta or maybe asking yourself ‘is Ibotta safe?”

The experts at Careful Cents have the answers you’re looking for.

You’ll learn all there is to know about Ibotta, if it’s safe and if you’ll save money with it–or not.

We’ll start with the big question that’s on everyone’s mind…

Is Ibotta Legit?

Started in 2011, Ibotta is the largest consumer technology company in Denver, Colorado, has been downloaded over 30 million times, and has paid over $375 million in cash back to its users.

Ibotta works with some of the largest brands in the world, including Procter & Gamble, Coca Cola, Unilever, Nordstrom, Best Buy, Heineken, Rite Aid, Sephora and others.

According to data published by Ibotta, 45 million sessions happen on their mobile app every month, and users spend an average of 4.9 minutes in the Ibotta app during an average session.

“Ibotta works with some of the largest brands in the world, including Procter & Gamble, Coca Cola, Unilever, Nordstrom, Best Buy, Heineken, Rite Aid, Sephora and others…”

The founder of Ibotta, Bryan Leach, is a graduate of Harvard, Oxford and Yale Law School, and during his time outside of work, Leach has climbed 44 of Colorado’s 58 tallest mountains.

Fun fact: Ibotta is supposed to be pronounced like “I bought a…”

Does the question “Is Ibotta legit?” sound crazy yet? It should, because Ibotta is absolutely a legitimate company. But is it worth your time? Well, that’s a whole other question entirely–and we sure think so!

Ibotta Review by Careful Cents

I visited the Ibotta app store page and Google searched “Ibotta reviews.”

Well, with over 303k reviews, averaging 4.7 out of 5 stars on the Apple app store, my first impression of Ibotta was favorable. The Ibotta BBB reviews weren’t exactly favorable, but people don’t go out of there way to leave favorable comments on BBB anyway.

What impressed me most there was the company’s responsiveness: for instance, if you take a look at the Ibotta BBB page, Ibotta has received 636 complaints in the last 3 years, 250 of which were closed in the last 12 months. Virtually every single one has a response, and the majority of them have been resolved.

Sad as it is, that’s pretty remarkable. Especially for a company as big as Ibotta.

Next, was the app itself.

To save you time, here’s the short version:

Ibotta works.

And it’s nowhere near as much of a pain as clipping coupons.

Of course, it’s not without minor annoyances. Mainly, the “pain” of having to scan your item and your receipt, rather than just the receipt at the end. Again, very minor stuff here.

But for every small inconvenience there are a lot of major upsides.

Namely, the number of stores it accepts and the percentages you can get back with it. The sheer number of items you can use also make it extremely valuable.

For instance, while other cash back apps limit you to specific brands, Ibotta even allows you to get rebates on generic brands, store brands and healthy food, too. That way you aren’t stuck scarfing down sugary cereals just because they were on sale.

Because of this, it’s clear Ibotta is in touch with today’s more health conscious consumer.

Not many other app developers in the space are.

So, the next big question on your mind now probably is..

How does Ibotta work?

The application itself is very easy to use.

You download it from the app store, create your account–which asks for your name, date of birth, mailing address, and other information like gender–than you can claim your $10 account.

  1. Check for offers before you shop.
  2. Once you find relevant offers, go shop for them.
  3. After you shop, take pictures of your receipt (or link your loyalty card to the app).
  4. Then cash out. It’s that easy.

My recommendation is to map out all of your shopping in as much in advance as possible, that way you can maximize your savings and discounts.

Here’s another major upside: Ibotta works at hundreds of retailers, both offline and online.

Unlike with clipping coupons or even other cashback apps, you can let your shopping needs guide you, versus being restricted with buying the few items that have coupons.

For comparison, other cash back apps–like Paribus by Capital One, which you can learn more about in our detailed Paribus review–works with just 25 stores. Again, with Ibotta, you can shop with hundreds.

And speaking of Paribus–which we love, by the way–here are other apps like Ibotta…

Apps like Ibotta

There are number of different apps like Ibotta.

  • Paribus was started by two Harvard grads and acquired by Capital One. One of the most exciting cashback apps in recent years, you can learn more in our Paribus review.
  • Ebates is a pioneer in the cashback app space, and was first started all the way back in 1999. Since then it’s been used by tens of millions of people–who’ve saved over a $1B!
  • Dosh is one of the newer cash back apps that has a gorgeous, easy to use interface and bountiful rewards in the form of cashback. Look out for our review on them next.

Ibotta review wrap-up

So, what’s the final verdict here?

Is Ibotta safe? Is Ibotta legit?

We recommend Ibotta 100%.

It can be lucrative if you check the app for offers before you go shopping. It’s fast and easy to use (simply upload a snapshot of the items you purchased and the receipt–that or link your shopper card).

Their customer service is both fast and helpful, this  being based on our analysis of the thousands of Ibotta reviews we’ve gone through while writing up this very Ibotta review.

And one more thing…

Ibotta can help you earn a lot of cashback.

It’s the elephant in the room that we may have not acknowledged dutifully enough in here. But just so there’s no confusion: you can make great money back on purchases. You won’t get rich, but you will get paid, sometimes up to as much as 10% back on your everyday purchases.

That’s probably the best thing about Ibotta…

Ibotta accomplishes what it advertises: it saves users time while helping them earn real cash–not points–on everything from groceries and food to fashion and apparel.
