In many ways still a central state in the country, Virginia has excellent land, plenty of prosperity, and millions of people making their home in the state. Yet Virginia also has its share of disasters in its past, with plenty of damaged homes as part of the total cost. We don’t want you to have to worry about such an issue, which is why we recommend homeowners insurance to anyone that could use it. It’s easy to get, extremely affordable in the state, and will give you and your family another layer of protection.

Here are the three cheapest homeowners insurance providers operating in Virginia:

The Three Cheapest Quotes:

Note that Virginia homes and homeowners can differ greatly, so you will likely see a different rate and have a slightly different experience than the trends and averages written about below. We ask that you use the information as a general guide and not an exact prediction.

The number listed next to each provider is the average annual rate for a standard policy.

1) State Farm: $990

State Farm is by far the cheapest option in Virginia, and this comes as no surprise to us. They are one of the largest and most stable insurance companies in the country, and they are a household name to anyone who has ever even considered getting an insurance policy. You can rely on them to provide you with a basic plan that will cover all your needs.

Yet while they’re the perfect choice for the average homeowner, anything outside the bell curve might not find what they need with State Farm, as there are few customization options and perks to work with.

You can expect the following working with State Farm:

  • Some of the best online resources and tools in the business, including an online quoting tool that will tell you everything you need to know.
  • Some level of dedication to making sure customers are satisfied.
  • Plenty of agents across the state available to help you easily sign up and answer any questions you might have.

2) Allstate: $1,395

The second cheapest option after a bit of a price jump, Allstate is a similarly large and widespread insurance provider that can also provide you with strong coverage and a plan that will allow you to rest easier each night. With great financial strength, Allstate will stand tall with you no matter the issue. Owners of older homes and homeowners looking to bundle policies may also want to take a closer look at Allstate.

Yet Allstate starts to falter when it comes to customer service, because they are simply lacking if you were to compare them to the other companies on this list. Whether it’s the pushy agents or sometimes long response times, it’s likely that your nerves and patience will be tested, and you deserve better for the price.

You can expect the following working with Allstate:

  • Many different opportunities to reduce your rate and make your plan even more affordable.
  • Excellent online and mobile apps, making processes and research much easier.
  • Optional coverages such as water backup, identity theft restoration, business property, scheduled personal property, and garden and landscaping. Umbrella coverage is also available.

3) Farmers: $1,545

Farmers is an excellent option if you’re willing to pay a bit extra, as they have the options and customization opportunities that State Farm doesn’t and also the excellent customer service Allstate is lacking. We’re always glad to see when they’re affordable for people, and we encourage you to at least get a quote if you think they can use a custom plan that fits the unique needs of your home.

Yet while they’re great on paper, some people find that the happiness doesn’t last, and after a while become unsatisfied with Farmers, either because the rate went up or because representatives took too long to provide support. Some were unsatisfied with the coverage levels themselves. Be careful of your policy, and read it over to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want.

You can expect the following working with Farmers:

  • An excellent loss of use policy.
  • Options for townhomes, condos, and other types of housing.
  • Three different base packages to start with, and customization options stemming from each of them.

Other Notable Virginia Homeowners Insurance Providers

It was impossible to get a reliable average rate for every insurance provider operating in Virginia, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other companies worth your consideration. Here are two more worth your consideration:

4) Travelers

Travelers is a well-known provider across the area that focuses primarily on making sure customers have customization options, flexibility within their plan, and low rates. They might be the best choice if some of the options listed above are too expensive, yet you still need a few special coverages or considerations for your home.

However, the Travelers experience isn’t always a pleasant one, if you take the customer service into account. There are plenty of complaints against them, and more still if you consider that many people weren’t happy with their coverage levels. You might wish to be careful about them.

You can expect the following working with Travelers:

  • A wide range of optional policy add-ons to work with.
  • Financial stability that is nearly unparalleled, making you certain they’ll never miss a payout.
  • Discount opportunities for installing protective devices, bundling, owning a “green home”, remaining claim-free, or recently getting a home.

An organization dedicated to primarily helping military members, former military members, and their families, USAA is notable in Virginia for providing excellent insurance options to those who quality while keeping costs low. Furthermore, you can expect excellent customer service from agents who know how to work with the unique needs of service members and their families. They really should be one of your top choices, at least at the start.

In fact, the only negative thing we can say about them is that they might not have some of the bells and whistles found with other companies, but we still think they’re excellent and have everything needed to keep your home covered.

You can expect the following working with USAA:

  • An extremely well-trained staff which is always happy to help.
  • Other financial products and services if you feel you need them.
  • Great bundling discounts if you’re in the market for more than one policy.

Virginia homeowners, whether they have just built a new home or have a family history in the state that stretches back for centuries, deserve a fallback plan should a storm, fire, or another threat damage or even effectively destroy their home. We know that one of the above companies can provide it, but only you will be able to make the final decision based on your needs and goals for homeownership. We hope that the above information proved useful, and also hope that you will find a policy that will be perfect soon.
