Florida has beautiful, sunny beaches, but Florida also is in the line of fire for multiple major hurricanes a year and can be prone to fires and other disasters as well. This can make apartment living a somewhat arduous task for those who don’t have some sort of insurance or safety net to help should something happen to their place. For this reason, we looked into the most affordable renters insurance providers in the area so you can start getting quotes that much faster and know exactly what you’re getting into.

Here are the four cheapest renters insurance providers operating in Florida:

The Four Cheapest Quotes:

Florida is a large state with a lot of diversity, not only in people but in risk. Based on your location, the level of crime in your area, and other factors, your rate might wildly differ from what you see here.

The number listed next to each provider is the average annual rate for a standard policy.

1) State Farm: $253

On average, the most affordable provider in Florida was State Farm, a provider with a national reach that is known for its ease-of-use, low annual rates, and simple yet sufficient plans for their customers. The low rates can get even lower, though, if you take advantage of their bundling options and try to find additional discounts. They do offer some customization options, although they won’t be as extensive as other providers listed here.

There are some relative downsides, and they mostly relate to a lack of quality water and sewer coverage, which can certainly be a deal-breaker in Florida. Additionally, their agents can be a bit hit or miss in their quality, so you may need to contact a few to start working with one you like.

You can expect the following working with State Farm:

  • A loss-of-use policy that beats nearly all others.
  • A commitment to giving you the lowest rate possible.
  • Very competitive expensive items coverage so you get back the full worth of your valuables.

2) Progressive: $317

The second cheapest option in the state is Progressive, a widespread company that is well-known for its other insurance offerings all across the country. You can get discounts through bundles, getting a quote in advance, living in a gated or more secure community, and even if you are just ok getting all your documents via email. What makes them shine are their high coverages for most items, categories, and damages, making them well worth the cost (especially in Florida) for many.

They do use a second-party underwriter, which could complicate the claims process and make it so that you don’t have as much control as to who you’re working with as you would like. Additionally, their potential discounts aren’t as strong as what other companies offer, either in terms of amount or variety.

You can expect the following working with Progressive:

  • A low deductible compared to other providers.
  • Additional optional water back-up and personal injury coverages available as extras.
  • An easy, online claims process that will help you get back on track quickly.

3) Esurance: $317

The digital age has perhaps brought us Esurance, and not a moment too soon. A provider of cheap insurance for many people throughout the country, they seek to satisfy their customers through an internet-heavy process and have thus far succeeded at doing so. A provider of multiple insurance types, you may also find excellent bundling options after some time spent getting a quote.

However, despite our research which states otherwise, their website does not mention serving Florida. You may work instead through their partners at Homesite, depending on the exact type of insurance you’re trying to get and where you live. This may cause confusion you may not wish to deal with, and we understand that. Additionally, several customers report misinformation and poor communication regarding payments, services, and other matters, which can be frustrating.

You can expect the following working with Esurance:

  • A wide array of options to help you get exactly the coverage you want and need.
  • Optional sewer and drain backup, replacement cost, and earthquake coverage options. Additionally, you can get additional insurance riders for certain items.
  • A very user-friendly website that also has plenty of more advanced tools for you to utilize.

4) GEICO: $341

A great choice for people who already have car insurance through the well-known company, GEICO can offer competitive rates while still providing some excellent coverage. The most expensive company on this list, they are still nonetheless worth a look depending on the discounts you can procure (and the difference in price isn’t too great as compared to other firms). It should also be noted that GEICO doesn’t necessary underwrite their policies themselves and will often outsource that to other companies. You may wish to investigate who you would actually be working with should you need to make a claim (it can vary by region).

However, outside of installing safety features and bundles, you might not be able to easily get those discounts, and as with State Farm flood and water damage insurance can be hard to come by. Outside of these problems (and a few customer service complaints) they are a company that excels in most categories.

You can expect the following working with GEICO:

  • Links to some of the best car insurance options you can find.
  • Optional earthquake, indemnity theft, and valuable items coverage.
  • Absolutely no doubt when it comes to their ability to conduct business efficiently and pay out any fair claim.

Florida has some excellent options for renters insurance, but making the right choice might still be difficult for you, and that’s perfectly fine. Remember that the cheapest choice might not be the best choice, depending on you and your family’s specific needs. Nonetheless, we’re certain that one of these four affordable options will be a great pick, and we hope that no matter your end result you find the security net your apartment needs.
