Home to plenty of history and one of the economic centers of the country, Massachusetts is a dense state and one with plenty of moving opportunities that makes apartment living a common and attractive option. What isn’t so attractive is a disaster such as fire or break-in leaving you without either a place to stay or many of your most valued possessions. That’s why we nearly always recommend getting renters insurance to readers, as it can provide a safety net that can turn an experience that ruins your year into something that’s much more of an inconvenience.

Here are the five cheapest renters insurance providers operating in Massachusetts:

The Four Cheapest Quotes:

Whether you’re in Western Mass or right in the middle of Boston, renters will have different lives, apartments, and risk factors. All of these can affect your rate, so please consider the following numbers and descriptions general guides as opposed to exact predictions of your future experience.

The number listed next to each provider is the average annual rate for a standard policy.

1) Amica: $182

Easily one of the best options for renters insurance in Massachusetts, Amica is the on-average cheapest renters insurance provider we could find. This alone would be enough to make them worth a look, but they are also one of the best providers when it comes to customer service. They have a commitment to maintaining long-term relationships with their customers, and their retention rate (over 90 percent) shows it.

The main concern you might have when working with Amica is a relative lack of customization options, but there is often still some leeway to your policy for coverage changes and additional needs. There are also a few concerns about mismanagement and confusion on their end, but they are few and far between.

You can expect the following working with Amica:

  • An easy claims process that will work smoothly for you during a very stressful time.
  • A feeling that your satisfaction is of paramount importance.
  • Bundling opportunities with a long list of other insurance products offered by Amica.

2) GEICO: $269

A name easily associated with insurance across the country and beyond, GEICO is the second cheapest provider in the state and perhaps the best choice for those who already have car insurance with them (or would be interested in switching over) and would be looking to bundle, considering the quality of those services and the massive discounts you can receive. This isn’t to say their renters insurance policies aren’t worth it in themselves, however, as you’ll likely find all the coverage you need.

Something else you should be aware of is the fact that in many cases GEICO does not underwrite their policies themselves and instead uses an outside underwriter. It’s quite possible you would be dealing with them and not GEICO should you need to make a claim, so research along these lines would be prudent. Flood insurance can also be hard to come by, which can be a very important consideration for Massachusetts residents.

You can expect the following working with GEICO:

  • Discount opportunities should you be willing to install additional security or fire prevention measures in your home.
  • An easy-to-use claims system and payment system that removes as much stress from the situation as possible.
  • A strong structure within the company that grants the customer a clear line of access and minimal level of confusion.

3) Allstate: $272

Another widespread provider with a strong national brand and an infrastructure to match, Allstate provides insurance nearly as inexpensive as GEICO, and provides you with some excellent coverages (such as their expensive item coverage) that makes them competitive even when in the same bracket as Amica or GEICO.

Working with Allstate, you will want to keep an eye out for price hikes on your annual premium depending on where you live. If you live in a high crime area in Massachusetts, another provider would serve you better. Additionally, Allstate does not have the best customer service in the business.

You can expect the following working with Allstate:

  • Fantastic water damage and flooding coverages, which can be a must-have if you happen to live closer to the coast or cape.
  • A structure that makes them a great choice for those looking for a simple yet organized policy that will work like clockwork.
  • Excellent bundling options when it comes to saving on your total rate.

4) Liberty Mutual: $330

The most expensive option, but not by too much, Liberty Mutual is a reliable renters insurance option that has few weaknesses in both its policies and its services, making them a great choice for people who don’t want to delve too deeply into extra features and simply want solid coverage for their apartment they won’t have to think about tomorrow.

In contrast to GEICO, however, Liberty Mutual is something you might want to put the brakes on when it comes to bundling, especially regarding car insurance, which doesn’t always get so high marks from customers or critics.

You can expect the following working with Liberty Mutual:

  • The benefits of partnerships with companies, organizations, clubs, and workplaces across the country, mostly in the form of discounts for members.
  • A great online platform and associated support and services.
  • A very helpful staff for anything renters insurance related.

There might not be as many competitive options for renters insurance working in Massachusetts as we expected, but we’re certain that one of the above four companies will be able to provide you with not only a satisfactory policy, but one that you’ll be happy with for as long as you live in your current place. We recommend you get a quote and do more research into the firms listed here that you think might work best for you, then make an educated decision about not only the company but the customization options you want. We hope you get a policy soon, and we hope that it brings you the peace of mind you deserve.
