Searching for a Swagbucks review?
Or maybe you’re just curious and asking yourself “Is Swagbacks legit?”
Well, you’ve come to the right place, because this review was written by the Careful Cents Skeptic-in-Chief when it comes to money making apps and paid survey sites. Having written at length about legitimate, genuinely useful consumer products before–we covered one of my favorites in this recent Paribus review–I get a sour taste in my mouth with companies that waste peoples time and money with bogus marketing hype.
I was skeptical about Swagbacks, too.
But after trying it, I have to admit: it’s legit. What turned me from skeptic to believer? This right here:
That’s not much money after you convert it from SB–those are Swagbucks–to actual cash dollars. But that’s not what won me over. It’s the fact that I made enough to get a free $10 Amazon gift card while doing other work or just relaxing. It was fast, easy and didn’t require much brain power at all. Oh, and it’s 100% legit. And if it works, it works.
But before we get too ahead of ourselves, let’s circle back to the beginning…
What is Swagbucks anyway?
What Is Swagbucks?
Swagbucks was founded in February 2008 by Josef Gorowitz, a veteran and former Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, from Los Ángeles. A digital services company based in El Segundo, California, Swagbucks is, primarily, a rewards program and online polling company.
Is Swagbucks Legit?
Since Swagbucks first opened their doors over a decade ago, they’ve paid members out just over $321,356,971 in rewards, and give out, on average, 7000 free gift cards a day. These numbers are what led us to write this Swagbucks review in the first place.
If it was a scam or fly-by-night business, they almost certainly wouldn’t be doing numbers that big.
Swagbucks ranked near the top of our 2019 list of legit ways to get free gift cards and it is now one of the top 500 websites in the United States.
Used by millions of people from all over the world to make money online, the Swagbucks app is even one of the top 100 apps in the app store Shopping category, with over 1.5K ratings averaging of over 4.5 stars. In conclusion: is Swagbucks legit? Absolutely.
Is Swagbucks Safe?
Reviews are a great way to determine safety and, the good news is, you can find Swagbucks reviews everywhere! But let’s look at Trustpilot. With 12,221 reviews and an average star rating of 8.4 out of 10.

Even the Swagbucks BBB reviews page is positive. The Swagbucks app parent company, Proedge, LLC, has an A- rating with the BBB and is rated an average of 4 out of 5 stars based on 341 customer reviews. Not to mention the company has been around for over a decade.
Swagbucks has gone to great lengths to allow users to share feedback, and for the most part, that feedback is positive. In fact, it’s what makes the Swagbucks app so great. Not only is it safe and legit–but they actually encourage feedback so they can keep making it better for you, the end user. So, is Swagbucks safe? Absolutely.
How Does Swagbucks Work?
Swagbucks is so popular because it allows you to make money so many different ways. There are four primary ways to make money on Swagbucks.
During the research phase of this Swagbucks review, we felt there was insufficient information on the earning potential for making money using the Swagbucks search engine feature, so we chose to exclude.
- Get paid for online surveys
- Get free money via cashback
- Watch videos in your spare time
- Shop using their search engine
During the research phase of this Swagbucks review, we felt there was insufficient information on earning potential using the Swagbucks search engine feature, so we chose to exclude it. You can learn more about it at the end of this section.
Swagbucks Online Surveys
The first way you can make money with Swagbucks is through their online surveys. In fact, Swagbucks has the online survey process down to a science, hence why they scored so high in our new 2019 Swagbucks review.
Here’s how it all works:
All you have to do is curl up on your couch, put on some Netflix if you so desire, create your Swagbucks account and–after you finish registration–you can start taking paid surveys!
These surveys are on a wide variety of topics, and are largely dependent upon answers you give when registering and additional answers you provide as you work your way through other surveys. It’s an intelligent platform that adapts and learns from your responses.
Some surveys pay more than others. The highest paying surveys on Swagbucks are called “Gold Surveys” and you’re eligibility for them is going to vary based on the responses you give.
Note: if you provide false or misleading information on your surveys, Swagbucks will deactivate your account and you will forfeit all SB dollars earned.
Each survey varies in length and value. For instance, same take 25 minutes while others can be completed in under 3 minutes or less. The length and complexity of the survey will dictate your earning potential.
Pictured above: Swagbucks local cashback shows you nearby offers and what percentage in cash back you can expect back.
If you thought making money doing online surveys was easy, wait until you try their cash back feature. They offer cash back at hundreds of stores, including major retailers like Kohls and Amazon (plus many, many more).
Much like Ebates or other popular cash back platforms, the best part is the sheer amount you can earn back (the maximum amount you can expect is 20 percent). Note that the average falls somewhere between 5 to 10 percent for most retailers, which is still a lot better than 0 percent!
The Swagbucks video platform is just another fun and easy to make money online. It’s another reason we’re recommending them in our Swagbucks review: because it’s a unique feature others don’t have.
Although the amount of money you can expect to earn watching Swagbucks videos is small, roughly 1-5 SB points per video in most cases, it doesn’t make it any less worthwhile.
In fact, if you want to maximize your earnings while minimizing your input–who the hell isn’t interested in that, eh?–just keep the videos playing on the background of your device while you work. Then just listen in like a podcast, checking in periodically to watch the next video (and fatten up your free gift card balances).
Swagbucks Search Engine
You can also make money using Swagbucks with their search engine, however, the amount of time you’d have to spend searching and how much you’d make is a mystery. All that’s known about the feature is that you earn based on time spent, not number of searches. Even better, why not try it and let us know your experience with it?
Although the online interface is intuitive and easy to use, the application will enhance your experience all the more. The Swagbucks mobile app available is available via the Google Play or the App Store. It allows you to view your SB balances–those are Swagbucks points which you can redeem for cash or gift cards–plus, perform offer searches, answer surveys and more.
Is Swagbucks Worth It?
So here we are at the final, pressing question. After it’s all said and done, is Swagbucks worth it? Well, let’s do a quick review of the facts: you can make money doing virtually nothing–just by shopping how you normally would–with the Swagbucks cashback feature.
In your spare time, also while doing virtually nothing, you can rack up free gift cards doing online surveys. Sounds like a good deal so far. Plus you get to work with an established, trusted company that’s paid out millions of dollars in cash and other goodies to users. Oh, and it’s completely free to download and use!
But wait, there’s more. If you sign up right now, you’ll get a $10 bonus plus additional bonuses for every friend you refer.
