Thankfully, it’s not–and it’s actually worth your time. So, how does Sweatcoin work?
They pay you for walking outdoors.
After you install it, the Sweatcoin app uses your smartphone’s accelerometers and GPS location to track your outdoor movement, then it converts those steps into its own currency.

The company was founded on a simple premise: once upon a time, it was in our best interest to move less. Now it’s not–sitting is killing us, in fact. The Sweatcoin app is their attempt to incentivize us to get moving again.
“Nature created a special mechanism to make us do what it wants — in behavioral economics it is called Present Bias. It’s the reason we’d rather procrastinate or have another mince pie and watch TV instead of going for a walk.”
In an attempt to counteract this instinct to be lazy, they’re tugging at another, equally compelling, the instinct of ours: instant gratification. Maybe you’ll opt to skip that walk, run or exercise session for “your health” because it’s an ambiguous reason (although it shouldn’t be), but it’s hard to skip exercise when you’re going to get paid for it.
Their tagline “it pays to walk” is marketing gold. It’s a compelling sales pitch, that’s for sure. But does it hold up to any scrutiny?

Sweatcoin Scam! Is Sweatcoin Legit?
Once #1 app in the Apple app store in the health and fitness category–a feat in of itself–Sweatcoin has been covered in Business Insider, The New Yorker, Tech Crunch, The New York Times, and more.
Used by millions, the concept is brilliant.
The Sweatcoin app now sits at #7 with an average of 4.4 stars out of 14k+ reviews. It’s “been an instant hit” according to Forbes.
The Telegraph wrote in their Sweatcoin review that, “if you’ve ever needed an incentive to exercise, a new app could give you a much-needed boost to get active.”
It’s hard to argue with stats like this. Sweatcoin scam? We think not.
Sweatcoin App Cons
However, none of this means that Sweatcoin isn’t without some downsides. There are a few:
Not Enough Ways to Earn Sweatcoins
The Sweatcoin app doesn’t offer enough ways to redeem coins. Some items cost far too many Sweatcoins while other products have limited availability. This makes some prizes unrealistic unless you save or are outright unattainable.
Steps Are Only Counted Outside
The app only counts steps taken outside. I understand the need to encourage people to walk outdoors. There has been considerable reach on the benefits of walking outdoors, from lowering your blood pressure to decreasing stress.
Daily Earning Potential is Limited
You can only earn so many coins in a day. This is one downside that wasn’t immediately obvious until I tried the app myself.
The first level is the “Mover” plan. It’s free, but you’re limited to 5 Sweatcoins per day (you’re capped at the amount you can earn per day).
The “Shaker” plan costs 5 Sweatcoins per month but allows you to earn up to 10 Sweatcoins per day.
Next is the “Quaker” plan which costs 20 Sweatcoins per month but entitles you to 15 Sweatcoins per day.
Last, is the “Breaker” plan which costs 30 Sweatcoins per month but gets you up to 20 Sweatcoins per day.
The cost is immaterial as you can often cancel it out the very first day you upgrade. This makes it a great deal. However, the downside is the limited gain as a free member. If you’re a free member, you’re limited to 5 Sweatcoins a day.
So, if you’re walking more than the amount you are able to earn, you will not receive payment for the additional time you worked.
Those extra points earned will disappear and revert back to your 5 Sweatcoin limits. But there are many positives here as well.
Sweatcoin App Upsides
Regardless of the cons, there are plenty of pros as well:
Sweatcoin is a fun way to encourage walking.
At the end of the day, as I alluded to earlier, the benefits of being outdoors are immense. If you’re on the fence about walking your dog one day, you will almost certainly do it if you have this installed–you’ll be rewarded for it.
Challenge Family and Friends
Here’s another fun part: You can compete with friends and family.
Once you’re logged into the Sweatcoin app, it will display the amount you’ve all earned and the number of total steps taken.
The prizes–albeit limited–are fun: from bags and headphones to fitness and outdoor-related subscription boxes that deliver straight to your doorstep.
