For people who live there, Massachusetts couldn’t be better. Between Boston, Western Mass, and the cape, there’s something for everyone and a place for every type of homeowner. And while there generally isn’t too much to worry about in the state, you still hear reports of fires and some storm damage, and winter weather can make you wish you had a backup plan. We think that a homeowners insurance policy can be that safety net, and to help you find one we reviewed the major providers for you.
Here are the three cheapest homeowners insurance providers operating in Massachusetts:
The Three Cheapest Quotes:
Quotes will vary from home to home, based on location and a series of other factors. You should expect to get a slightly different experience and rate from what is listed below. That being said, you can rely on this information as a general guide.
The number listed next to each provider is the average annual rate for a standard policy.
1) Progressive: $1,078
A very popular insurance provider (although some would be more precise to call them a service), working with Progressive is for most people the cheapest path to homeowners insurance, and they are worth at least a bit of your time for a look. After you give them some information, they will try and get quotes for you, and will often be able to get a better deal than you would be able to find on your own.
Yet Progressive also will require you to put in more legwork on your end, at least if you want to know exactly what you’re getting. Progressive partners with many different companies and not all of them can be investigated so easily. Keep this in mind and remember you don’t need to finalize a policy if you start talking to them.
You can expect the following working with Progressive:
- Likely a great number of policy add-ons to choose from.
- Plenty of helpful tools and resources for confused customers.
- A company with very few general complaints against them.
2) Amica: $2,008
Amica isn’t always the most popular or the cheapest throughout the rest of the country, but it is one of the best insurance companies to work within many respects, primarily when it comes to customer service. And while that might not be worth the $1000 jump from Progressive, it can go a long way, especially since they can accommodate the needs of many different types of homes.
However, compared to some of the more customizable policies you might find elsewhere, Amica is rather straightforward. You may also need to check to see if some of their options are available in your area at all.
You can expect the following working with Amica:
- Two different coverage levels, with their platinum coverage being a large jump.
- Optional water backup, computer, valuable items, business property, and credit card fraud coverages.
- An easy and painless claims process.
3) Liberty Mutual: $2,349
With a foothold in just about every state, Liberty Mutual is a well-known name in the insurance world, and alongside a homeowners insurance policy, they offer many different types of policies, some not universally offered by competitors. You can expect them to provide you with an adequate level of coverage and experience all-around, and they can easily be the cheapest option outside of Progressive if you know how to use discounts to your advantage.
They aren’t the most fiscally stable company, though, which might impact their decisions, although in most cases you have little need for worry. Other people have reported issues with claims and difficulty getting a timely response or a full payout, which is a more pressing concern for potential customers.
You can expect the following working with Liberty Mutual:
- A wide range of discounts available, including those for new homeowners and policy bundling discounts.
- Optional policy add-ons for valuables, water backup, and identity fraud expenses.
- The ability to help you get emergency repairs made if something were to happen.
Other Notable Massachusetts Homeowners Insurance Providers
Figuring out the average annual rate for some companies simply wasn’t possible for us, but we still wanted to inform you of a few other great choices in the state.
A well-known insurance provider across the country that focuses primarily on customization, flexibility, and low rates, Travelers is a great option for Massachusetts homeowners who might not be able to afford an expensive policy but still want some special coverages. The balancing act may be tough, but it’s often worth it.
However, Travelers customers aren’t always pleased, whether the reason is the customer service (most reviews and experiences aren’t glowing) or that the coverage wasn’t enough after the fact. Perhaps don’t choose Travelers if you’re just looking for a simple and easy experience.
You can expect the following working with Travelers:
- Discount opportunities for bundling, protective devices, owning a “green home”, remaining claim-free, or recently buying a home.
- Financial stability to the degree that you will never have to worry about your accepted claim going unpaid.
- Many different policy add-ons to choose from.
5) MAPFRE Insurance
It’s quite possible you know MAPFRE instead by the name of Commerce Insurance, which was founded in Massachusetts decades ago and remains a large employer in the state. MAPFRE Mostly working through independent agents, you can get a variety of insurance products through them, and they are probably the best choice if you have a large, expensive, or antique home.
Yet for many customers, the service is adequate at best and the price is beat elsewhere. We wouldn’t recommend MAPFRE by default, but understand that certain people will love working with them if they know what they are looking for.
You can expect the following working with MAPFRE Insurance:
- Institutional experience working with Massachusetts homeowners.
- Special plans for antique homes, more expensive homes, and more. They have quite a few additional coverage options you should look into, if you feel the need for specific coverages.
- An excellent IT helpdesk and online support for your electronic devices as part of your policy.
Getting homeowners insurance isn’t always the easiest task, especially for owners of certain types of homes. Yet we’re confident that with the above information you’ll be able to make a shortlist and get some quotes. Once you know what you’re working with, all you need to do is follow your priorities. We hope that you take the time soon and get exactly what you want for you and your family.
